I am a woman that craves order. I make more lists for things than I care to admit. If you are anything like me, your planner is always with you and you have a routine that your family can almost bet on. Having a routine is great because there is power in routine. Yet, there are times when our routines may not be working. It is important to not just have a routine, but to make your routine work for you.
It is easy to get into a habit without actually thinking about it. You just start to do certain things repeatedly and they eventually become routine. For me, it had a lot to do with my time management. It was something as simple as waking up only 10 minutes before I need to get my oldest daughter up for school. Then rushing her and being upset with her every morning because she is not moving fast enough for me. Or then getting upset with myself later that day when it’s time for bed and I have not spent any quiet time with God that day because I was too busy.
Between the kids and their activities, your work and your husband’s work schedule, and just everyday life, it is so easy for our routines to create themselves. Your routine becomes a mad dash to just get things done without you actually sitting down to see what truly needs to be done or doing things you really want to do.
Things also get added to your daily to-do list and you work tirelessly to complete that to-do list only to come up short every day. Then over time most of us move self-care out of our routine in hopes to give us more time to get more things done. Forgetting that in order for us to take care of others we need to make sure we are taking care of ourselves too.
Your routine should consist of things that help you to not only take care of your family, but also take care of YOU! They should also be things that bring you closer to the goals you have set and the visions you have for yourself, your marriage, and your family.
To Make Your Routine Work For You It Starts With Being Intentional
You have to be intentional about what you do and what you do not do. It is up to you to use your time wisely. If you want to spend more time with God, then you have to make it a part of your routine. Whether that means waking up early or setting time aside after the kids go to bed. If you want to eat healthier, then you may have to put meal planning and meal prep into your routine. You may want to communicate better with your husband, then you have to make it a point to connect and talk daily about things other than the kids. If you want to spend more quality time with your kids, then you may have to put that in your routine. This could be something as simple as letting them help you make dinner.
We all have a routine and it important to make sure that routine is working for us. If it is not, then it’s up to us to make the necessary changes. Having a healthy routine that works for you not only allows you accomplish things you never thought possible, but it also helps you create the environment for you to be the best YOU!
I’d love to know how you are making your routine work for you
and if you have had to make any changes to help you do that in the comments!
